I have seldom seen a man more severe toward innovation in Islam than he was. He heard me reciting "In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate," and he said, "My son, beware of innovation. I prayed behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and behind Abu Bakr, and behind Umar, and behind Uthman, and I never heard a single one of them say it. So when you recite, say 'All praise belongs to Allah, Lord of the worlds' [Fatihah 1:2]."
حدثنا أبو بكر بن أبي شيبة حدثنا إسمعيل ابن علية عن الجريري عن قيس بن عباية حدثني
وقلما رأيت رجلا أشد عليه في الإسلام حدثا منه فسمعني وأنا أقرأ بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم فقال أي بني إياك والحدث فإني صليت مع رسول الله ﷺ ومع أبي بكر ومع عمر ومع عثمان فلم أسمع رجلا منهم يقوله فإذا قرأت فقل {الحمد لله رب العالمين}
Its isnad is daif. Tirmidhi narrated it in "Prayer," chapter on the omission of reciting Bismillah ar-Rahman ar-Raheem aloud, hadith 244, from the hadith of Ismail as related here, and he said, "It is a hasan hadith." The son of Abdullah bin Mughafal is named Yazid, as stated in Musnad Ahmad 4/85 and in Sunan Tirmidhi, and I have not found anyone who deemed him reliable other than Tirmidhi, so his status is unknown. Nasai narrated it, hadith 909, through another route from Qays bin Abayah, as related here.
