The Messenger of Allah ﷺ led us in the Maghrib prayer, then did not come out until half the night had passed. He then came out and led them in prayer, after which he said, "The people have already prayed and gone to sleep, but you have remained in prayer as long as you waited for the prayer. Were it not for the weak and the sick, I would have loved to delay this prayer until the middle of the night."
حدثنا عمران بن موسى الليثي حدثنا عبد الوارث بن سعيد حدثنا داود بن أبي هند عن أبي نضرة
صلى بنا رسول الله ﷺ صلاة المغرب ثم لم يخرج حتى ذهب شطر الليل فخرج فصلى بهم ثم قال إن الناس قد صلوا وناموا وأنتم لم تزالوا في صلاة ما انتظرتم الصلاة ولولا الضعيف والسقيم أحببت أن أؤخر هذه الصلاة إلى شطر الليل
[Its chain is sahih] Abu Dawud narrated it in Al-Salat, chapter on the time of the last night prayer, no. 422, from the hadith of Dawud, by this route.
