He reported that a man was struck with a head wound during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He then had a wet dream and was instructed to perform the full bath. He bathed, suffered a chill, and died. When news of this reached the Prophet ﷺ, he said, "They killed him, may Allah kill them. Was not the cure for ignorance simply to ask?"Ata said, "It has reached us that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'He should have washed his body and left his head alone where the wound was.'"
حدثنا هشام بن عمار حدثنا عبد الحميد بن حبيب بن أبي العشرين حدثنا الأوزاعي عن عطاء بن أبي رباح قال
يخبر أن رجلا أصابه جرح في رأسه على عهد رسول الله ﷺ ثم أصابه احتلام فأمر بالاغتسال فاغتسل فكز فمات فبلغ ذلك النبي ﷺ فقال قتلوه قتلهم الله أولم يكن شفاء العي السؤال قال عطاء وبلغنا أن رسول الله ﷺ قال لو غسل جسده وترك رأسه حيث أصابه الجراح
[Sahih] Abu Dawud narrated it, no. 3037, from the hadith of Uzai, that it reached him from Ataa with this wording. Uzai explicitly stated that he heard it directly from Ataa, as recorded by Hakim (1/178). So the hadith of Ibn Abbas is sahih, and the hadith has other routes as well. As for the hadith of Ataa, "If he had washed his body..." and so on, it is daif because of its irsal.
