The Prophet ﷺ mentioned something and said, "That will happen at the time when knowledge departs."I said, "Messenger of Allah, how can knowledge depart when we recite the Quran, teach it to our children, and they will teach it to their children until the Day of Resurrection?"He replied, "May your mother be bereaved of you, Ziyad. I used to consider you among the most understanding men in Medina. Are not these Jews and Christians reciting the Torah and the Gospel without acting upon anything in them?"

ذكر النبي ﷺ شيئا فقال ذاك عند أوان ذهاب العلم قلت يا رسول الله وكيف يذهب العلم ونحن نقرأ القرآن ونقرئه أبناءنا ويقرئه أبناؤنا أبناءهم إلى يوم القيامة قال ثكلتك أمك زياد إن كنت لأراك من أفقه رجل بالمدينة أوليس هذه اليهود والنصارى يقرءون التوراة والإنجيل لا يعملون بشيء مما فيهما
[Its chain is daif] Ahmad narrated it (4/160, 218) from Waki with this chain. Ibn Kathir graded it sahih in his Tafsir, and Hakim graded it sahih according to the criteria of the two sheikhs (3/590), and Dhahabi agreed with him. Amr bin Mura also narrated it from Salim with this chain (Ahmad 4/219, and from his route Hakim 1/100). Busiri criticized it for having a break in the chain, and he quoted Bukhari as saying that Salim did not hear from Ziyad bin Labid. It has a corroborating narration with a broken chain in Tabarani's Al-Kabir (5/265).
