It is as if I can still see the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recounting the story of one of the prophets whose people had beaten him. He was wiping the blood from his face and saying, "My Lord, forgive my people, for they do not know."
حدثنا محمد بن عبد الله بن نمير حدثنا وكيع حدثنا الأعمش عن شقيق
كأني أنظر إلى رسول الله ﷺ وهو يحكي نبيا من الأنبياء ضربه قومه وهو يمسح الدم عن وجهه ويقول رب اغفر لقومي فإنهم لا يعلمون
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of the Prophets, Chapter (54), Hadith: 6929/3477, from the hadith of Amash through this route, and Muslim narrated it in the Book of Jihad, Chapter on the Battle of Uhud, Hadith: 1791, from Ibn Numayr through this route.
