I came in to see the Prophet ﷺ while he was suffering from a fever. I placed my hand on him and felt his heat through the blanket. I said, "Messenger of Allah, how severe this is upon you!"He said, "We are like that. The trial is doubled for us, and so is the reward."I asked, "Messenger of Allah, which people are tested most severely?"He replied, "The prophets."I asked, "Messenger of Allah, then who?"He said, "Then the righteous. One of them would be tested with such poverty that he could find nothing but a cloak to wrap himself in. And one of them would rejoice at affliction just as one of you rejoices at ease."
[Its isnad is hasan] Bukhari narrated it in Adab al-Mufrad, no. 510, from the hadith of Hisham bin Saad, through this route. Busiri graded it sahih, as did Hakim, 4/307, and Dhahabi, according to the standard of Muslim. It also has another route in Ahmad, 3/94, and elsewhere.
