Abu Ubayda reported,

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When the Children of Israel fell into shortcomings, a man would see his brother committing a sin and forbid him from it. Then the next day, what he had seen from him would not prevent him from being his eating companion, his drinking companion, and his close associate. So Allah struck the hearts of some of them against others, and the Quran was revealed concerning them. Allah said, 'Cursed were those who disbelieved among the Children of Israel by the tongue of Dawud and Isa, son of Maryam' until he reached 'And if they had believed in Allah and the Prophet and what was revealed to him, they would not have taken them as allies, but many of them are defiantly disobedient' [Maidah 5:78–81]."The narrator said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had been reclining, then he sat up and said, "No, not until you seize the hand of the wrongdoer and bend him firmly toward the truth."Muhammad bin Bashshar narrated to us, Abu Dawud narrated to us, dictating it to me, Muhammad bin Abu al-Waddah narrated to us, from Ali bin Badhimah, from Abu Ubayda, from Abdullah, from the Prophet ﷺ, the like of it.
