Huzaifa bin Yaman reported,

We were sitting with Umar when he asked, "Which of you remembers what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said about tribulation?"Hudhayfah said, "I said, 'I do.'"Umar said, "You are bold indeed. How did he describe it?"Hudhayfah replied, "I heard him say, 'A man's tribulation lies in his family, his children, and his neighbor, and it is expiated by prayer, fasting, charity, enjoining good, and forbidding evil.'"Umar said, "That is not what I am asking about. I mean the tribulation that surges like the waves of the sea."Hudhayfah said, "Commander of the Believers, what have you to do with that one? Between you and it stands a locked door."Umar asked, "Will the door be broken or opened?"Hudhayfah replied, "No, it will be broken."Umar said, "Then it is more likely never to be shut again."We asked Hudhayfah, "Did Umar know who the door was?"He said, "Yes, as surely as he knows that tomorrow comes after tonight. I narrated to him a hadith that contained no errors."But we were too in awe of him to ask who the door was, so we said to Masruq, "You ask him." So he asked him, and Hudhayfah said, "Umar."

عن حذيفة قال

كنا جلوسا عند عمر فقال أيكم يحفظ حديث رسول الله ﷺ في الفتنة قال حذيفة فقلت أنا قال إنك لجريء قال كيف قال سمعته يقول فتنة الرجل في أهله وولده وجاره تكفرها الصلاة والصيام والصدقة والأمر بالمعروف والنهي عن المنكر فقال عمر ليس هذا أريد إنما أريد التي تموج كموج البحر فقال ما لك ولها يا أمير المؤمنين إن بينك وبينها بابا مغلقا قال فيكسر الباب أو يفتح قال لا بل يكسر قال ذاك أجدر أن لا يغلق قلنا لحذيفة أكان عمر يعلم من الباب قال نعم كما يعلم أن دون غد الليلة إني حدثته حديثا ليس بالأغاليط فهبنا أن نسأله من الباب فقلنا لمسروق سله فسأله فقال عمر
