We captured some sheep belonging to the enemy and seized them as plunder, then we set up our cooking pots. The Prophet ﷺ passed by the pots and ordered them to be overturned, then he said, "Plunder is not lawful."
[Its chain of transmission is hasan] Tabarani narrated it in Al-Kabir, 2/84, no. 1378, from the hadith of Ibn Abu Shayba through this route, and Shuba narrated it from Simak through this route (Tabarani, 2/83, Mustadrak of Hakim, 2/134). Busiri and Ibn Hibban graded it sahih, no. 1679, as did Hakim and Dhahabi, and Ibn Hajar in Al-Isabah (in the biography of Thalaba). The hadith has very many corroborating narrations.
