Nafi bin al-Azraq and his companions came to Imran and said, "You are doomed, Imran."He said, "I am not doomed."They said, "Yes, you are."He asked, "What is it that has doomed me?"They said, "Allah said, 'And fight them until there is no fitnah and the religion is entirely for Allah' [Anfal 8:39]."He replied, "We fought them until we drove them out, and the religion became entirely for Allah. If you wish, I will tell you a hadith I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."They asked, "Did you yourself hear it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?"He said, "Yes. I witnessed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when he had dispatched an army of Muslims against the polytheists. When they met them, they fought them fiercely, and the polytheists turned their backs in flight. A man from my own kin charged at one of the polytheists with his spear. When he was about to strike him, the man said, 'I bear witness that there is no god but Allah. I am a Muslim.' But he stabbed him and killed him. He then came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, 'Messenger of Allah, I am doomed.'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, 'What have you done?' once or twice, and the man told him what he had done. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, 'Why did you not split open his chest so you could know what was in his heart?'He said, 'Messenger of Allah, had I split open his chest, would I have known what was in his heart?'He said, 'You neither accepted what he spoke with his tongue nor knew what was in his heart.'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said no more to him. He did not remain alive long before he died, and we buried him. By morning his body was on the surface of the ground. We said, 'Perhaps an enemy has dug him up.' So we buried him again and ordered our young servants to keep watch over him. By morning he was again on the surface of the ground. We said, 'Perhaps the boys dozed off.' So we buried him and stood guard ourselves. By morning he was once more on the surface of the ground. So we cast him into one of those mountain ravines."
