Takhrij, its chain is daif. Recorded by Samaani in Adab Imla wa Istimla, p. 108, from the hadith of Sufyan Thawri, from Abu Ishaq Shaybani, with this wording. Busiri graded it sahih, but it contains Sufyan's use of "an" without direct assertion, as noted earlier, hadith no. 162. It also has a corroborating report with a missing link in its chain, which is itself daif, found in Ibn Abu Shayba, 10/220.Muslim recorded it in his Sahih, hadith no. 172/2380, in the Book of Virtues, from Ubayy bin Kaab, raising it to the Prophet, "Allah's mercy be upon us and upon my brother so-and-so." The brother being Musa, peace be upon him.
