The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Tomorrow I will be riding out to the Jews. Do not be the first to greet them with the salam, but if they greet you, respond by saying, 'And upon you.'"
حدثنا أبو بكر حدثنا ابن نمير عن محمد بن إسحق عن يزيد بن أبي حبيب عن مرثد بن عبد الله اليزني
قال رسول الله ﷺ إني راكب غدا إلى اليهود فلا تبدءوهم بالسلام فإذا سلموا عليكم فقولوا وعليكم
Its chain is hasan] Ahmad narrated it, 4/233, from the hadith of Ibn Ishaq via this route, and he explicitly stated the hearing in it. The hadith is also in Musannaf Ibn Abu Shayba, 8/442, and it has a corroborating narration in Nasai's Kubra, and Ahmad, 6/398, and others, and its chain is hasan.
