The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to seek refuge from the evil eye of the jinn and then from the eyes of humans. When the two surahs of refuge were revealed, he adopted them and abandoned anything else for that purpose.
حدثنا أبو بكر بن أبي شيبة حدثنا سعيد بن سليمان عن عباد عن الجريري عن أبي نضرة
كان رسول الله ﷺ يتعوذ من عين الجان ثم أعين الإنس فلما نزلت المعوذتان أخذهما وترك ما سوى ذلك
Its isnad is daif. Tirmidhi transmitted it in his chapter on Medicine, the chapter on ruqya with the two Muawwidhatayn, hadith 2058, from the hadith of Jareeri with this wording, and he said it is hasan ghareeb. Nasai transmitted it as well, 8/271, hadith 5496, from the hadith of Saeed bin Sulayman with this wording.Jareeri's memory became mixed up, as mentioned earlier, number 2300, and I did not find anyone who narrated this hadith from him before that confusion set in.
