My uncle Yahya, and I never met a man among us more like him, used to relate to people that Asad bin Zurara, who was Muhammad's grandfather on his mother's side, was struck by a pain in his throat called dhubha.The Prophet ﷺ said, "Let me do my utmost, or let me leave no excuse untried, on behalf of Abu Umama."He cauterized him with his own hand, but he died.The Prophet ﷺ then said, "An evil death for the Jews. They will say, 'Why did he not ward it off from his companion?' Yet I have no power to bring benefit to him or to myself."

سمعه عمي يحيى وما أدركت رجلا منا به شبيها يحدث الناس أن أسعد بن زرارة وهو جد محمد من قبل أمه أنه أخذه وجع في حلقه يقال له الذبحة فقال النبي ﷺ لأبلغن أو لأبلين في أبي أمامة عذرا فكواه بيده فمات فقال النبي ﷺ ميتة سوء لليهود يقولون أفلا دفع عن صاحبه وما أملك له ولا لنفسي شيئا
Sourcing, [its chain of transmission is hasan] Tabarani reported it in Kabir, 22/287, 288, no. 739, from the hadith of Ibn Abu Shayba, with this wording, and it is also in Musannaf, 7/423. Haythami said in 5/98, "Its narrators are trustworthy," and Busiri said the same. I say, Yahya is mentioned among the companions in Isaba, 4/650, and the view affirming his reliability is the stronger one.
