While he was having lunch, a morsel of food fell from his hand. He picked it up, removed whatever dirt was on it, and ate it. The Persian nobles exchanged mocking glances at this, so it was said to him, "May Allah set the commander aright, these nobles are exchanging glances over your picking up that morsel when this food is laid out before you."He replied, "I was not going to abandon what I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for the sake of these foreigners. We used to be instructed that when one of us drops a morsel, he should pick it up, remove any dirt on it, and eat it, and not leave it for the devil."
حدثنا سويد بن سعيد حدثنا يزيد بن زريع عن يونس عن الحسن
بينما هو يتغدى إذ سقطت منه لقمة فتناولها فأماط ما كان فيها من أذى فأكلها فتغامز به الدهاقين فقيل أصلح الله الأمير إن هؤلاء الدهاقين يتغامزون من أخذك اللقمة وبين يديك هذا الطعام قال إني لم أكن لأدع ما سمعت من رسول الله ﷺ لهذه الأعاجم إنا كنا نأمر أحدنا إذا سقطت لقمته أن يأخذها فيميط ما كان فيها من أذى ويأكلها ولا يدعها للشيطان
