A man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "Messenger of Allah, I have come wanting to join you in jihad, seeking the face of Allah and the abode of the Hereafter. I came while both my parents were weeping."He replied, "Go back to them and make them laugh as you made them weep."
حدثنا أبو كريب محمد بن العلاء حدثنا المحاربي عن عطاء بن السائب عن أبيه
أتى رجل رسول الله ﷺ فقال يا رسول الله إني جئت أريد الجهاد معك أبتغي وجه الله والدار الآخرة ولقد أتيت وإن والدي ليبكيان قال فارجع إليهما فأضحكهما كما أبكيتهما
[Its chain of transmission is hasan]. Abu Dawud narrated it in the Book of Jihad, chapter on a man who goes out to fight while his parents are unwilling, hadith no. 2528, by way of Ataa, with this wording. Ibn Hibban, Hakim, and Dhahabi graded it sahih. Shubah, Thawri, Hammad bin Zayd, and others narrated it from Ataa with this wording, and it has other chains of transmission as well.
