A man shot another man with an arrow and killed him, and the slain man had no heir except a maternal uncle. Abu Ubayda bin Jarra wrote to Umar about this matter, and Umar wrote back to him saying that the Prophet ﷺ said, "Allah and His Messenger are the guardians of one who has no guardian, and the maternal uncle is the heir of one who has no heir."
Takhrij, hasan.Tirmidhi transmitted it in the Book of Inheritance, in the chapter on what has been said regarding the inheritance of the maternal uncle, hadith no. 2103, from the hadith of Sufyan Thawri through this route, and he said, "hasan sahih." Ibn Jarud graded it sahih, hadith no. 964, as did Ibn Hibban in his (Mawarid), hadith no. 1227.I say, Thawri narrated it using the ambiguous form "an," but his hadith has a hasan corroborating witness in Ibn Hibban, hadith no. 1226, Abu Dawud, hadith nos. 2899 and 2900, and Hakim, 4/344, among others. See also, the hadith has other corroborating witnesses mentioned at the following hadith.
