Saad bin Abu Waqqas reported,

I fell ill during the year of the conquest, so severely that I was on the verge of death. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to visit me, and I said, "Messenger of Allah, I have a great deal of wealth, and no one will inherit from me except a single daughter. Shall I give two-thirds of my wealth in charity?"He said, "No."I asked, "Then half?"He said, "No."I asked, "Then a third?"He said, "A third, and a third is plenty. To leave your heirs wealthy is better than to leave them destitute, begging from people."

حدثنا هشام بن عمار والحسين بن الحسن المروزي وسهل قالوا حدثنا سفيان بن عيينة عن الزهري

عن عامر بن سعد عن أبيه قال

مرضت عام الفتح حتى أشفيت على الموت فعادني رسول الله ﷺ فقلت أي رسول الله إن لي مالا كثيرا وليس يرثني إلا ابنة لي أفأتصدق بثلثي مالي قال لا قلت فالشطر قال لا قلت فالثلث قال الثلث والثلث كثير أن تذر ورثتك أغنياء خير من أن تذرهم عالة يتكففون الناس
