Its isnad is daif. Tirmidhi transmitted it in the Diyat chapter, in the section on what has been said about a man who kills his son, whether retaliation is exacted from him or not, hadith 1400, from the hadith of Abu Khalid Ahmar, with this wording.Hajjaj bin Artah, his status has already been discussed at hadith 496, 1129, and 2587, and he used the ambiguous form "an" in narrating. Muhammad bin Ajlan followed him in narrating it, with Bayhaqi, 8/38 and elsewhere, and Ibn Jarud graded it sahih at hadith 788, and others did as well. Ibn Ajlan used the ambiguous form "an," as already discussed at hadith 1967.The hadith has other paths of transmission as well. Abdull-Haq Ishbili said, "All these hadiths are defective, none of them is sound" (Talkhis, 4/17).
