We set out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the expedition to Tabuk, and with us was a companion of ours. He got into a fight with another man while we were on the road. The man bit our companion's hand, and our companion pulled his hand out of the man's mouth, knocking out one of his front teeth.The man then came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ seeking compensation for his tooth.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Does one of you deliberately attack his brother and bite him like a stallion, then come asking for compensation? There is no compensation for it."So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ dismissed the claim.
حدثنا أبو بكر بن أبي شيبة حدثنا عبد الرحيم بن سليمان عن محمد بن إسحق عن عطاء عن صفوان بن عبد الله
خرجنا مع رسول الله ﷺ في غزوة تبوك ومعنا صاحب لنا فاقتتل هو ورجل آخر ونحن بالطريق قال فعض الرجل يد صاحبه فجذب صاحبه يده من فيه فطرح ثنيته فأتى رسول الله ﷺ يلتمس عقل ثنيته فقال رسول الله ﷺ يعمد أحدكم إلى أخيه فيعضه كعضاض الفحل ثم يأتي يلتمس العقل لا عقل لها قال فأبطلها رسول الله ﷺ
Its isnad is hasan. Nasai narrated it in the Book of Qasamah, in the section mentioning the disagreement over Ataa regarding this hadith, no. 4769, from the hadith of Ibn Ishaq, with the same wording, and he explicitly stated the direct hearing in the version of Ahmad, 4/222, 223, and elsewhere.
