My father and my uncle, both of whom were present at Hunayn with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, reported, "The Prophet ﷺ prayed Dhuhr and then sat beneath a tree. Aqra bin Habis, the chief of Khindif, stood up before him to defend against the demand for the blood of Muhallim bin Jathama, and Uyayna bin Hisn stood up demanding retribution for the blood of Amir bin al-Adbat, who was from the tribe of Ashja. The Prophet ﷺ said to them, 'Will you accept the blood-money?'They refused. Then a man from Banu Layth named Mukaytil stood up and said, 'Messenger of Allah, by Allah, I can compare this slain man at the dawn of Islam to nothing but sheep that come to drink. The first of them is shot at, and the rest flee in panic.'The Prophet ﷺ said, 'You shall have fifty camels during our journey and fifty more when we return.'So they accepted the blood-money."
[Its isnad is hasan] Abu Dawud narrated it in the Book of Blood Money, chapter "The Leader Orders Pardon Regarding Bloodshed," hadith 4503, from the hadith of Ibn Ishaq, with this wording, and Ibn Jarud declared it sahih, hadith 777, and Hafiz declared it hasan in Al-Isabah 3/64. Ziyad bin Saad bin Dumayrah was deemed reliable by Ibn Hibban, Ibn Jarud, and others, so his hadith does not fall below the level of hasan.
