Abu Saeed Khudri reported,

Shall I not tell you what I heard from the very mouth of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, what my ears heard and my heart retained?A servant once killed ninety-nine people. Then the thought of repentance occurred to him, so he asked about the most learned person on earth. He was directed to a man, and he came to him and said, "I have killed ninety-nine people. Is there any repentance for me?"The man replied, "After ninety-nine people?"So he drew his sword and killed him, completing the hundred. Then again the thought of repentance occurred to him, so he asked about the most learned person on earth. He was directed to another man, and he came to him and said, "I have killed a hundred people. Is there any repentance for me?"The man said, "Woe to you, who could come between you and repentance? Leave this evil town you are in and go to the righteous town, the town of such and such, and worship your Lord there."So he set out heading for the righteous town, but his appointed time of death overtook him along the way. The angels of mercy and the angels of punishment then disputed over him.Iblis said, "I have the better claim to him, for he never disobeyed me for even a moment."The angels of mercy said, "He went out as a penitent."Hammam said, Humayd Tawil related to me from Bakr bin Abdullah, from Abu Rafi, who said, So Allah sent an angel, and they brought their dispute before him. Then they returned, and he said, "See which of the two towns he was nearer to, and assign him to its people."Qatada said, Hasan related to us, saying, When death came upon him, he strained himself forward, drawing nearer to the righteous town and farther from the evil one, so they assigned him to the people of the righteous town.Abu Abbas bin Abdullah bin Ismail al-Baghdadi narrated to us, Affan narrated to us, Hammam narrated to us, and he mentioned something similar.

حدثنا أبو بكر بن أبي شيبة حدثنا يزيد بن هارون أنبأنا همام بن يحيى عن قتادة عن أبي الصديق الناجي

عن أبي سعيد الخدري قال

ألا أخبركم بما سمعت من في رسول الله ﷺ سمعته أذناي ووعاه قلبي إن عبدا قتل تسعة وتسعين نفسا ثم عرضت له التوبة فسأل عن أعلم أهل الأرض فدل على رجل فأتاه فقال إني قتلت تسعة وتسعين نفسا فهل لي من توبة قال بعد تسعة وتسعين نفسا قال فانتضى سيفه فقتله فأكمل به المائة ثم عرضت له التوبة فسأل عن أعلم أهل الأرض فدل على رجل فأتاه فقال إني قتلت مائة نفس فهل لي من توبة فقال ويحك ومن يحول بينك وبين التوبة اخرج من القرية الخبيثة التي أنت فيها إلى القرية الصالحة قرية كذا وكذا فاعبد ربك فيها فخرج يريد القرية الصالحة فعرض له أجله في الطريق فاختصمت فيه ملائكة الرحمة وملائكة العذاب قال إبليس أنا أولى به إنه لم يعصني ساعة قط قال فقالت ملائكة الرحمة إنه خرج تائبا قال همام فحدثني حميد الطويل عن بكر بن عبد الله عن أبي رافع قال فبعث الله عز وجل ملكا فاختصموا إليه ثم رجعوا فقال انظروا أي القريتين كانت أقرب فألحقوه بأهلها قال قتادة فحدثنا الحسن قال لما حضره الموت احتفز بنفسه فقرب من القرية الصالحة وباعد منه القرية الخبيثة فألحقوه بأهل القرية الصالحة حدثنا أبو العباس بن عبد الله بن إسمعيل البغدادي حدثنا عفان حدثنا همام فذكر نحوه
