Abu Umaya reported,

A thief was brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He confessed openly, though no stolen goods were found in his possession. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I do not think you stole."The man replied, "Yes, I did."He said again, "I do not think you stole."The man replied, "Yes, I did."So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered that his hand be cut off, and it was done. Then the Prophet ﷺ said to him, "Say, 'I seek Allah's forgiveness and turn to Him in repentance.'"The man said, "I seek Allah's forgiveness and turn to Him in repentance."The Prophet ﷺ then said, "O Allah, accept his repentance," twice.
