Sourcing, hasan. Abu Dawud reported it in the Book of Business Transactions, chapter on deposits, hadith 3502, from the hadith of Malik, by this route, and it is found in the Muwatta, 2/609. Malik narrated it from someone he trusted, namely Ibn Lahia, as appears in the narration of Ibn Wahb. Ibn Lahia explicitly stated that he heard it directly, and he is corroborated by Harith bin Abdul-Rahman bin Abu Zubab, as recorded by Bayhaqi and others. Its chain of transmission is hasan.
