I taught some of the people of the Suffah the Quran and writing, and one of them gave me a bow as a gift. I said to myself, "It is not really wealth, and I can shoot with it in the cause of Allah." Still, I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about it.He replied, "If it would please you to be collared with a collar of fire, then accept it."
حدثنا علي بن محمد ومحمد بن إسمعيل قالا حدثنا وكيع حدثنا مغيرة بن زياد الموصلي عن عبادة بن نسي عن الأسود بن ثعلبة
علمت ناسا من أهل الصفة القرآن والكتابة فأهدى إلي رجل منهم قوسا فقلت ليست بمال وأرمي عنها في سبيل الله فسألت رسول الله ﷺ عنها فقال إن سرك أن تطوق بها طوقا من نار فاقبلها
Graded, its isnad is hasan. Abu Dawud narrated it in the chapter on business transactions, in the section on the earnings of a teacher, h:3416, from the hadith of Waki, and Hakim graded it sahih: 2/41,42, and its narrators are deemed trustworthy by the majority.
