He divorced his wife with a final, irrevocable divorce, then came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and asked him about it.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, "What did you intend by it?"He replied, "A single divorce."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "By Allah, you intended only a single divorce?"He said, "By Allah, I intended only a single divorce."So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned her to him.Muhammad bin Majah said, I heard Abu al-Hasan Ali bin Muhammad al-Tanafisi say, "How noble this hadith is!"Ibn Majah said, Abu Ubayd abandoned it, Najia rejected it, and Ahmad shrank from it.
[Its chain of transmission is daif] Abu Dawud narrated it in "Divorce," chapter "Concerning the Irrevocable Divorce," hadith 2208, from the hadith of Jareer, and Tirmidhi narrated it, hadith 1177, and mentioned some remarks. Zubayr bin Saeed is lenient in hadith transmission (Taqrib), but the route of Abu Dawud, hadith 2206, 2207, and others with a similar meaning make up for it. Abu Dawud, Hakim, and Qurtubi graded it sahih, and I have not seen any argument for those who declared it daif.
