My husband went out in search of some slaves of his who had run away. He caught up with them at the edge of al-Qadum and they killed him. The news of his death reached me while I was in one of the houses of the Ansar, far from the home of my family.I came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "Messenger of Allah, news has reached me of my husband's death, and I am in a house far from the home of my family and the home of my brothers. He left no wealth to support me, no inheritance, and no house that he owned. If you would permit me, I would join the home of my family and the home of my brothers, for that is dearer to me and better for managing some of my affairs."He said, "Do so if you wish."So I left, my eyes refreshed by what Allah had decreed for me through the tongue of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. But when I was in the mosque, or in one of the rooms, he called me and said, "What was it you said?"I repeated the matter to him, and he said, "Stay in the house where the news of your husband's death reached you until the prescribed term has been completed."So I observed the waiting period there for four months and ten days.
