I was a guest of Umar one night, and in the middle of the night he rose and went to strike his wife, so I came between them. When he returned to his bed, he said to me, "Ashath, remember from me something I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. A man is not to be questioned about why he strikes his wife, and do not sleep except after praying witr." And I have forgotten the third.Muhammad bin Khalid bin Khidash narrated to us, Abdul-Rahman bin Mahdi narrated to us, Abu Awana narrated to us with his chain of transmission something similar.

[Hasan] Abu Dawud narrated it in "Nikah," chapter "On Beating Women," hadith 2147, from the hadith of Abu Awana, with this wording. Hakim graded it sahih (4/175), and Dhahabi agreed with him.
