Ashath bin Qays reported,

I was a guest of Umar one night, and in the middle of the night he rose and went to strike his wife, so I came between them. When he returned to his bed, he said to me, "Ashath, remember from me something I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. A man is not to be questioned about why he strikes his wife, and do not sleep except after praying witr." And I have forgotten the third.Muhammad bin Khalid bin Khidash narrated to us, Abdul-Rahman bin Mahdi narrated to us, Abu Awana narrated to us with his chain of transmission something similar.

عن الأشعث بن قيس قال

ضفت عمر ليلة فلما كان في جوف الليل قام إلى امرأته يضربها فحجزت بينهما فلما أوى إلى فراشه قال لي يا أشعث احفظ عني شيئا سمعته عن رسول الله ﷺ لا يسأل الرجل فيم يضرب امرأته ولا تنم إلا على وتر ونسيت الثالثة حدثنا محمد بن خالد بن خداش حدثنا عبد الرحمن بن مهدي حدثنا أبو عوانة بإسناده نحوه
