This verse, "and reconciliation is best" [Nisa 4:128], was revealed concerning a man whose wife had been with him for a long time and had borne him children. He wished to replace her with another, so she came to an agreement with him that she would remain with him while he would not allot her a share of his time.

[Sahih] Umar bin Ali Muqaddami is trustworthy, but he used to practice tadlis heavily (Taqrib), and here he narrated with "an" without specifying direct hearing. However, his hadith has corroborating witnesses, including the hadith of Rafi bin Khadij. Hakim recorded it in 22/308-309 and graded it sahih according to the standard of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), and Dhahabi agreed with him.
