The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out and saw that a man had hung up clusters of dates. With a stick in his hand, he began striking and poking at that cluster, saying, "If the owner of this charity had wished, he could have given something better than this. The owner of this charity will eat dried, inferior dates on the Day of Resurrection."
حدثنا أبو بشر بكر بن خلف حدثنا يحيى بن سعيد عن عبد الحميد بن جعفر حدثني صالح بن أبي عريب عن كثير بن مرة الحضرمي
خرج رسول الله ﷺ وقد علق رجل أقناء أو قنوا وبيده عصا فجعل يطعن يدقدق في ذلك القنو ويقول لو شاء رب هذه الصدقة تصدق بأطيب منها إن رب هذه الصدقة يأكل الحشف يوم القيامة
Its isnad is hasan. Abu Dawud narrated it in the chapter on Zakat, in the section on what may not be given as fruit for charity, hadith 1608, from the hadith of Yahya bin Saeed, with this wording. Ibn Khuzayma, Ibn Hibban, Hakim, and Dhahabi graded it sahih.
