The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me to Yemen and instructed me to take, from crops watered by the sky and crops watered by means of baal, a tenth, and from crops watered by irrigation channels, half of a tenth.Yahya bin Adam said, "Baal, athari, and adhi all refer to that which is watered by rainwater from the sky. Athari is specifically what is cultivated by clouds and rain alone, receiving nothing but rainwater. Baal refers to grapevines whose roots have reached down into the earth to the water below, so they do not need to be irrigated for five or six years and can endure without watering. This is baal. Sayl is the water of the valley when it flows, and ghayl is a smaller flow of water."
حدثنا الحسن بن علي بن عفان حدثنا يحيى بن آدم حدثنا أبو بكر بن عياش عن عاصم بن أبي النجود عن أبي وائل عن مسروق
بعثني رسول الله ﷺ إلى اليمن وأمرني أن آخذ مما سقت السماء وما سقي بعلا العشر وما سقي بالدوالي نصف العشر قال يحيى بن آدم البعل والعثري والعذي هو الذي يسقى بماء السماء والعثري ما يزرع بالسحاب والمطر خاصة ليس يصيبه إلا ماء المطر والبعل ما كان من الكروم قد ذهبت عروقه في الأرض إلى الماء فلا يحتاج إلى السقي الخمس سنين والست يحتمل ترك السقي فهذا البعل والسيل ماء الوادي إذا سال والغيل سيل دون سيل
Its isnad is daif. See hadith 855 for its defect. Nasai also narrated it (al-Mujtaba 5/42, no. 2490, and al-Kubra, no. 2269) from the hadith of Abu Bakr, from Aasim, from Abu Waail, from Muaz, with similar wording, and he said (as in Tuhfat Ashraf 8/400), "This isnad is not that strong..." etc. See the preceding hadith, for it negates it.
