I went out with Abdullah bin Umar when an Arabi caught up with him and said to him, "The saying of Allah , 'And those who hoard gold and silver and do not spend it in the way of Allah'."Ibn Umar said to him, "Whoever hoards it and does not pay its zakat, woe to him. But this was before zakat was revealed. When it was revealed, Allah made it a means of purification for wealth."Then he turned and said, "I would not mind if I had gold equal to Mount Uhud, so long as I knew its amount, paid its zakat, and used it in obedience to Allah
."
Bukhari narrated it in the book of zakat, chapter "Whatever its zakat has been paid is not treasure hoarding," hadith 4661, 1404, from the hadith of Yunus, from Ibn Shihab, with this wording, as a suspended report, though Abu Dharr connected it with a full chain in his version. Al-Hafiz also narrated it in Taghliq al-Taliq, 5/6, through various routes from Ahmad bin Shabib, with this wording, as a connected report.
