When Ibrahim, the son of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, passed away, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wept. The one offering condolences, either Abu Bakr or Umar, said to him, "You are the most deserving of all people to honor the right of Allah."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "The eye sheds tears and the heart grieves, but we do not say anything that angers the Lord. Were it not that this is a true promise, an appointed gathering, and that the one who remains will follow the one who has gone before, we would grieve for you, Ibrahim, with a grief greater than this. Indeed, we are saddened by your loss."
حدثنا سويد بن سعيد حدثنا يحيى بن سليم عن ابن خثيم عن شهر بن حوشب
لما توفي ابن رسول الله ﷺ إبراهيم بكى رسول الله ﷺ فقال له المعزي إما أبو بكر وإما عمر أنت أحق من عظم الله حقه قال رسول الله ﷺ تدمع العين ويحزن القلب ولا نقول ما يسخط الرب لولا أنه وعد صادق وموعود جامع وأن الآخر تابع للأول لوجدنا عليك يا إبراهيم أفضل مما وجدنا وإنا بك لمحزونون
[Its chain of transmission is hasan] Tabarani narrated it in Al-Kabir, 24/170, 171, no. 432, 433, and Ibn Saad, 1/143, through routes from Yahya bin Salim, with this wording, and Busiri graded it hasan. It has a supporting narration in the sahih from the hadith of Anas, Bukhari, no. 1303, and Muslim, no. 2315, and the hadith has other supporting narrations as well.
