When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ died, the people disagreed about whether his grave should have a side niche (lahd) or a straight trench (shaqq). They argued about it until their voices grew loud.Umar said, "Do not raise your voices in the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, whether living or dead," or words to that effect. So they sent for both the man who dug straight trenches and the man who dug side niches. The one who made side niches arrived first and dug a lahd for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and then he was buried ﷺ.

Takhrij hasan, and Busiri graded it sahih. Ubayd bin Tufayl is unknown (majhul), and his teacher is daif (Taqrib).Tirmidhi reported it, hadith no. 1018, through another route, from Abdul-Rahman bin Abu Bakr, from Ibn Abu Mulayka, with another hadith about the death of the Prophet, and he deemed this Abdul-Rahman daif.Muhammad bin Sahl Tamimi narrated with a sahih chain, from Ayesha, who said, "There were two gravediggers in Madinah. When the Prophet ﷺ died, they said, 'Where shall we bury him?' Abu Bakr said, 'In the place where he died.'" One of them used to dig a niche grave (lahd) and the other used to dig a slit grave (shaq). The one who dug the niche grave came forward and dug a niche grave for the Prophet.Ibn Abu Dunya narrated this from him, and Malik related it as a mursal narration from Hisham, from his father, with the same account (Bidayah wal-Nihayah, 5/252). The hadith has other supporting narrations as well.
