When the Prophet ﷺ passed away, there were two men in Medina, one who dug graves with a side niche (lahd) and another who dug straight graves (darih). The people said, "Let us seek our Lord's guidance and send for both of them. Whichever one arrives first, we will leave the matter to him." So they sent for them, and the one who made the side-niche graves arrived first, so they dug a side-niche grave for the Prophet.
حدثنا محمود بن غيلان حدثنا هاشم بن القاسم حدثنا مبارك بن فضالة حدثني حميد الطويل
لما توفي النبي ﷺ كان بالمدينة رجل يلحد وآخر يضرح فقالوا نستخير ربنا ونبعث إليهما فأيهما سبق تركناه فأرسل إليهما فسبق صاحب اللحد فلحدوا للنبي
Sourcing, [Hasan] Ahmad narrated it, 3/139, from Abu Nadr Hashim bin Qasim, through him, and Busiri graded it sahih, saying, "Mubarak bin Fadala was deemed trustworthy by the majority, and he explicitly used the wording of direct transmission, which removes the suspicion of tadlis against him, but he is known for tadlis al-taswiya, refer to Taqrib." I did not find an explicit statement that Humayd heard it, and the following hadith serves as a corroborating witness for it.
