The Prophet ﷺ, whenever he went out for the Eid prayer, would return by a different route than the one he had taken.
Bukhari transmitted it in the Book of the Two Eids, chapter on one who takes a different route when returning on the day of Eid, hadith no. 986, as a suspended narration (ta'liq), and Tirmidhi transmitted it, hadith no. 541, as a connected narration, saying it is hasan gharib. Ibn Hibban, Hakim, and Dhahabi graded it sahih. It also has another route recorded by Bukhari, which he considered preferable to this one, but both routes are preserved (mahfuz).
