The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to perform witr with a single rakah, then pray two rakahs while seated, reciting in them while sitting. When he wanted to bow, he would stand up and then bow.
حدثنا عبد الرحمن بن إبراهيم الدمشقي حدثنا عمر بن عبد الواحد حدثنا الأوزاعي عن يحيى بن أبي كثير عن أبي سلمة قال حدثتني
كان رسول الله ﷺ يوتر بواحدة ثم يركع ركعتين يقرأ فيهما وهو جالس فإذا أراد أن يركع قام فركع
Muslim narrated it in Salat al-Musafirin, chapter on the night prayer and the number of units the Prophet ﷺ prayed at night, etc., hadith no. 738b, from the hadith of Yahya with a similar meaning but slight variation, and Busiri said, this is a sahih chain, its narrators are trustworthy.
