I observed the Prophet ﷺ for a month, and in the two units of prayer before Fajr he would recite "Say, O disbelievers" and "Say, He is Allah, the One."
حدثنا أحمد بن سنان ومحمد بن عبادة الواسطيان قالا حدثنا أبو أحمد حدثنا سفيان عن أبي إسحق عن مجاهد
رمقت النبي ﷺ شهرا فكان يقرأ في الركعتين قبل الفجر قل يا أيها الكافرون وقل هو الله أحد
[Hasan] Tirmidhi narrated it in his Sunan, Prayer, chapter on lightening the two rakahs of Fajr and what the Prophet ﷺ used to recite in them, hadith 417, from the hadith of Sufyan Thawri, and he said, hasan. This hadith has corroborating narrations in Muslim, hadith 726, and elsewhere.
