Ayesha reported,
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Uthman, if Allah ever entrusts you with this affair one day and the hypocrites seek to make you remove the shirt that Allah has clothed you with, do not remove it." He said this three times.Numan said, I asked Ayesha, "What kept you from informing the people of this?"She replied, "I had forgotten it."

عن عائشة قالت
قال رسول الله ﷺ يا عثمان إن ولاك الله هذا الأمر يوما فأرادك المنافقون أن تخلع قميصك الذي قمصك الله فلا تخلعه يقول ذلك ثلاث مرات قال النعمان فقلت لعائشة ما منعك أن تعلمي الناس بهذا قالت أنسيته

Sourcing, sahih. Narrated by Tirmidhi, who said it is a hasan gharib hadith, chapter on Manaqib, section "The Prophet's prevention," etc., hadith no. 3705. Its chain contains a printing error, from the hadith of Rabia, and it added in the chain for Uthman, "Abdullah bin Amir," Rabia heard it from Abdullah bin Abu Qays, from Numan, in the same manner. Ibn Hibban graded it sahih in Mawarid, vol. 196.
