We were with the Prophet ﷺ when he drew a line, then drew two lines to its right and two lines to its left. He then placed his hand on the middle line and said, "This is the path of Allah." Then he recited this verse, "And this is My straight path, so follow it, and do not follow other ways, lest they take you away from His path" [Anam 6:153].
حدثنا أبو سعيد عبد الله بن سعيد حدثنا أبو خالد الأحمر قال سمعت مجالدا يذكر عن الشعبي
كنا عند النبي ﷺ فخط خطا وخط خطين عن يمينه وخط خطين عن يساره ثم وضع يده في الخط الأوسط فقال هذا سبيل الله ثم تلا هذه الآية {وأن هذا صراطي مستقيما فاتبعوه ولا تتبعوا السبل فتفرق بكم عن سبيله}
[Its isnad is daif] Ahmad reported it: 3/397, from Abdullah bin Muhammad, from Abu Khalid, with this wording. Mujalid is daif (Talkhis al-Mustadrak: 2/597). Part of the hadith has corroborating evidence in Ibn Hibban (Mawarid), no. 1741, and elsewhere, and Hakim graded it sahih, 2/318, as did Dhahabi. The hadith of Ahmad, 1/435, serves as a substitute for it.
