"We find mention of the regular prayer and the prayer of fear in the Quran, but we do not find mention of the traveler's prayer."Abdullah replied to him, "Allah sent Muhammad ﷺ to us when we knew nothing, and we simply do as we saw Muhammad ﷺ do."
حدثنا محمد بن رمح أنبأنا الليث بن سعد عن ابن شهاب عن عبد الله بن أبي بكر بن عبد الرحمن عن أمية بن عبد الله بن خالد أنه
إنا نجد صلاة الحضر وصلاة الخوف في القرآن ولا نجد صلاة السفر فقال له عبد الله إن الله بعث إلينا محمدا ﷺ ولا نعلم شيئا فإنما نفعل كما رأينا محمدا ﷺ يفعل
[Its chain of transmission is hasan]Nasai narrated it: 3/117, Shortening the Prayer While Traveling, no. 1435, from the hadith of Layth, with this wording. He also narrated it: 1/226, Prayer, the chapter on how the prayer was made obligatory, no. 458, from the hadith of Muhammad bin Abdullah Shuaythi, from Abdullah bin Abu Bakr, with this wording. Ibn Khuzayma graded it sahih, no. 946, as did Ibn Hibban, no. 101, and Hakim (1/408), and Dhahabi agreed with him.
