I asked Abu Waail, "Did you witness Siffin?"He replied, "Yes, and I heard Sahl bin Hunayf saying..."In another chain, Musa bin Ismail narrated to us, Abu Awana narrated to us, from Amash, from Abu Waail, who said, Sahl bin Hunayf said, "People, distrust your own opinions when it comes to your religion. I saw myself on the day of Abu Jandal, and had I been able to reject the command of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, I would have rejected it. We never placed our swords on our shoulders facing a matter that alarmed us except that they led us toward an outcome we could understand, except for this present matter."Abu Waail said, "I witnessed Siffin, and what a wretched Siffin it was."

سألت أبا وائل هل شهدت صفين قال نعم فسمعت سهل بن حنيف يقول ح و حدثنا موسى بن إسماعيل حدثنا أبو عوانة عن الأعمش عن أبي وائل قال قال سهل بن حنيف يا أيها الناس اتهموا رأيكم على دينكم لقد رأيتني يوم أبي جندل ولو أستطيع أن أرد أمر رسول الله ﷺ عليه لرددته وما وضعنا سيوفنا على عواتقنا إلى أمر يفظعنا إلا أسهلن بنا إلى أمر نعرفه غير هذا الأمر قال وقال أبو وائل شهدت صفين وبئست صفون
