Two of the best men nearly destroyed themselves, Abu Bakr and Umar.When the delegation of Banu Tamim came to the Prophet ﷺ, one of them suggested Aqra bin Habis al-Tamimi al-Hanzali, of the Banu Mujash, while the other suggested someone else.Abu Bakr said to Umar, "You only meant to oppose me."Umar replied, "I did not mean to oppose you."Their voices grew loud in the presence of the Prophet ﷺ, so the verse was revealed, "O you who believe, do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet," up to His words "great" [Hujurat 49:2].Ibn Abu Mulayka said that Ibn Zubayr reported, "After this, Umar would speak to the Prophet ﷺ so softly that he would have to ask him to repeat himself in order to hear what he said." He did not mention the same about his father, meaning Abu Bakr.
حدثنا محمد بن مقاتل أخبرنا وكيع أخبرنا نافع بن عمر
كاد الخيران أن يهلكا أبو بكر وعمر لما قدم على النبي ﷺ وفد بني تميم أشار أحدهما بالأقرع بن حابس التميمي الحنظلي أخي بني مجاشع وأشار الآخر بغيره فقال أبو بكر لعمر إنما أردت خلافي فقال عمر ما أردت خلافك فارتفعت أصواتهما عند النبي ﷺ فنزلت {يا أيها الذين آمنوا لا ترفعوا أصواتكم فوق صوت النبي} إلى قوله {عظيم} قال ابن أبي مليكة قال ابن الزبير فكان عمر بعد ولم يذكر ذلك عن أبيه يعني أبا بكر إذا حدث النبي ﷺ بحديث حدثه كأخي السرار لم يسمعه حتى يستفهمه
