Someone said to Umar, "Will you not appoint a successor?"He replied, "If I appoint one, then someone better than me appointed a successor, namely Abu Bakr. And if I leave the matter, then someone better than me left it, namely the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."The people then praised him, and he said, "I am both hopeful and fearful. I only wish to come out of this even, with neither reward for me nor sin against me. I will not bear its burden in life or in death."
حدثنا محمد بن يوسف أخبرنا سفيان عن هشام بن عروة عن أبيه
قيل لعمر ألا تستخلف قال إن أستخلف فقد استخلف من هو خير مني أبو بكر وإن أترك فقد ترك من هو خير مني رسول الله ﷺ فأثنوا عليه فقال راغب راهب وددت أني نجوت منها كفافا لا لي ولا علي لا أتحملها حيا ولا ميتا
