Abdullah bin Abbas reported,

I used to teach the Quran to some of the Muhajirun, among them Abdul-Rahman bin Awf. While I was at his house in Mina, and he was with Umar bin Khattab during the last Hajj that Umar performed, Abdul-Rahman returned to me and said, "If only you had seen the man who came to the Commander of the Faithful today and said, 'Commander of the Faithful, what do you think of so-and-so, who is saying that if Umar were to die, he would pledge allegiance to so-and-so. By Allah, the pledge to Abu Bakr was nothing but a sudden, unplanned affair, yet it was concluded.'"Umar became angry and then said, "Allah willing, I shall stand this evening before the people and warn them against these men who wish to usurp their affairs."Abdul-Rahman said, "I said, 'Commander of the Faithful, do not do this. The Hajj season gathers the rabble and the lowest of people, and these are the ones who will press closest to you when you stand before the people. I fear that you will rise and say something that every flighty person will spread far and wide, that they will not grasp it properly, and will not place it in its proper context. Wait until you reach Madinah, for it is the abode of the Hijra and the Sunnah. There you can address the people of understanding and the leading men, and say what you wish to say with full authority. The people of knowledge will grasp your words and place them in their proper context.'"Umar replied, "By Allah, if Allah wills, I shall do this at the very first opportunity I have in Madinah."Ibn Abbas said, "We arrived in Madinah at the end of Dhul-Hijjah. When Friday came, I hastened out as soon as the sun had passed its zenith and found Saeed bin Zayd bin Amr bin Nufayl seated by the corner of the pulpit. I sat down beside him so that my knee touched his. Before long, Umar bin Khattab came out. When I saw him approaching, I said to Saeed bin Zayd bin Amr bin Nufayl, 'He will say something this evening that he has never said since becoming caliph.'"Saeed disapproved of this and said, "What could he possibly say that has not been said before?"Umar sat down on the pulpit, and when the muezzins had fallen silent, he stood, praised Allah as He deserves, and then said, "To proceed. I am about to say to you words which it has been decreed that I should say. I do not know whether they may be among the last words I speak. Whoever understands and retains them, let him relate them wherever his mount carries him. As for whoever fears he will not grasp them, I do not permit anyone to lie about me.Allah sent Muhammad ﷺ with the truth and revealed to him the Book. Among what Allah revealed was the verse of stoning. We recited it, understood it, and retained it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ carried out stoning, and we carried it out after him. I fear that as time passes, someone will say, 'By Allah, we do not find the verse of stoning in the Book of Allah,' and they will go astray by abandoning an obligation that Allah revealed. Stoning, according to the Book of Allah, is the due punishment upon any married man or woman who commits adultery, when there is clear evidence, or pregnancy, or confession. We also used to recite among what we recited from the Book of Allah, 'Do not turn away from your fathers, for it is unbelief on your part to turn away from your fathers,' or 'For it is unbelief on your part to turn away from your fathers.'Furthermore, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Do not exalt me as Isa son of Maryam was exalted. Say only, the servant of Allah and His Messenger.'It has reached me that someone among you is saying, 'By Allah, if Umar were to die, I would pledge allegiance to so-and-so.' Let no man deceive himself by saying that the pledge to Abu Bakr was a sudden, unplanned affair which was nonetheless concluded. Indeed, it was so, but Allah protected us from its evil. There is no one among you to whom necks are stretched in admiration as they were to Abu Bakr. Whoever pledges allegiance to a man without consultation with the Muslims, no allegiance is owed to him, nor to the one who pledged to him, lest both be killed.Among the events that befell us when Allah took His Prophet ﷺ was that the Ansar opposed us and gathered together in the Saqifa of Banu Saida. Ali and Zubayr and those with them also stood apart from us, while the Muhajirun gathered around Abu Bakr. I said to Abu Bakr, 'Abu Bakr, let us go to these brothers of ours, the Ansar.'So we set off toward them. As we drew near, we met two righteous men from among them who told us what the people had agreed upon. They asked, 'Where are you headed, company of Muhajirun?'We answered, 'We are going to these brothers of ours from the Ansar.'They said, 'You need not go near them. Settle your own affair.'I said, 'By Allah, we shall go to them.'We continued until we came to them in the Saqifa of Banu Saida. There was a man wrapped up in a cloak among them. I asked, 'Who is this?'They replied, 'This is Saad bin Ubada.'I asked, 'What is wrong with him?'They said, 'He is feverish.'When we had sat for a little while, their speaker proclaimed the testimony of faith, praised Allah as He deserves, and then said, 'To proceed. We are the helpers of Allah and the battalion of Islam, while you, company of Muhajirun, are but a small group. Now a faction of your people has come trying to cut us off from our roots and exclude us from authority.'When he fell silent, I wished to speak. I had prepared a speech that pleased me, which I wanted to deliver before Abu Bakr, taking care to soften some of his sharpness. But when I was about to speak, Abu Bakr said, 'Easy, Umar.' I disliked angering him, so Abu Bakr spoke. He was more forbearing and dignified than I. By Allah, he did not omit a single point I had liked in my prepared speech without saying something equal to it or better, off the cuff, until he fell silent. He said, 'Whatever good you have mentioned about yourselves, you are deserving of it. But this matter will only be recognized as belonging to this clan of Quraysh. They are the most central of the Arabs in lineage and in homeland. I am pleased to offer you one of these two men, so pledge allegiance to whichever of them you wish.'He took my hand and the hand of Abu Ubayda bin Jarra, who was sitting between us. I disliked nothing he said except this. By Allah, I would rather be brought forward and have my neck struck, where this would draw me toward no sin, than to rule over a people among whom Abu Bakr was present, unless my own soul were to tempt me with something at the hour of death which I do not feel now. Then a speaker from the Ansar said, 'I am the well-rubbed scratching post and the well-supported palm. From us an emir, and from you, company of Quraysh, an emir.'The clamor grew loud and voices rose, until I feared division. So I said, 'Abu Bakr, stretch out your hand.' He stretched out his hand, and I pledged allegiance to him, the Muhajirun pledged to him, and then the Ansar pledged to him. We jumped over Saad bin Ubada, and one of them said, 'You have killed Saad bin Ubada.'I said, 'May Allah kill Saad bin Ubada.'"Umar said, "By Allah, in all that we faced, we found no course stronger than the pledge to Abu Bakr. We feared that if we left the people without a pledge having been made, they might pledge allegiance to one of their own after we departed, and we would either pledge to them on terms we did not accept, or we would oppose them and corruption would result. So whoever pledges allegiance to a man without consultation with the Muslims, no allegiance is owed to him, nor to the one who pledged to him, lest both be killed."
