A woman came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "I have come to offer myself to you in marriage."She stood for a long time while he looked her up and down. When her standing grew long, a man said, "Marry her to me if you have no need of her."The Prophet ﷺ asked, "Do you have anything to give her as a dowry?"The man replied, "No."The Prophet ﷺ said, "Go and look."He went, then returned and said, "By Allah, I found nothing."The Prophet ﷺ said, "Go and search, even for an iron ring."He went, then returned and said, "No, by Allah, not even an iron ring." He was wearing a lower garment but no upper cloak, so he said, "I will give her my lower garment as her dowry."The Prophet ﷺ said, "Your lower garment? If you wear it, she will have nothing of it, and if she wears it, you will have nothing of it."The man stepped aside and sat down. The Prophet ﷺ saw him turning away and ordered that he be called back. When he came, the Prophet ﷺ asked, "How much of the Quran do you know?"The man said, "I know such and such surahs," naming a number of them.The Prophet ﷺ said, "I have given her to you in marriage for what you know of the Quran."
حدثنا عبد الله بن مسلمة حدثنا عبد العزيز بن أبي حازم عن أبيه أنه سمع
جاءت امرأة إلى النبي ﷺ فقالت جئت أهب نفسي فقامت طويلا فنظر وصوب فلما طال مقامها فقال رجل زوجنيها إن لم يكن لك بها حاجة قال عندك شيء تصدقها قال لا قال انظر فذهب ثم رجع فقال والله إن وجدت شيئا قال اذهب فالتمس ولو خاتما من حديد فذهب ثم رجع قال لا والله ولا خاتما من حديد وعليه إزار ما عليه رداء فقال أصدقها إزاري فقال النبي ﷺ إزارك إن لبسته لم يكن عليك منه شيء وإن لبسته لم يكن عليها منه شيء فتنحى الرجل فجلس فرآه النبي ﷺ موليا فأمر به فدعي فقال ما معك من القرآن قال سورة كذا وكذا لسور عددها قال قد ملكتكها بما معك من القرآن
