Zayd bin Thabit reported,

Abu Bakr sent for me after the heavy casualties at the Battle of Yamama, and I found Umar bin Khattab with him.Abu Bakr said, "Umar came to me and said, 'The slaughter has been severe among the reciters of the Quran on the day of Yamama, and I fear that such slaughter may overtake the reciters in other battlefields, causing much of the Quran to be lost. I think you should order that the Quran be collected.'"Abu Bakr continued, "I said to Umar, 'How can I do something that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not do?'""Umar replied, 'By Allah, it is a good thing.'""Umar kept urging me until Allah opened my heart to it, and I came to see what Umar had seen."Zayd said, Abu Bakr said to me, "You are a young, intelligent man whom we do not suspect of anything, and you used to write down the revelation for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. So search out the Quran and collect it."By Allah, if they had charged me with moving one of the mountains, it would not have been heavier upon me than what he ordered me to do regarding the collection of the Quran.I said, "How can you do something that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not do?"He answered, "By Allah, it is a good thing."Abu Bakr kept urging me until Allah opened my heart to what He had opened the hearts of Abu Bakr and Umar to.So I began searching out the Quran, gathering it from palm stalks, thin white stones, and the chests of men, until I found the closing of Surat at-Tawba with Abu Khuzayma al-Ansari, finding it with no one else, "There has certainly come to you a Messenger from among yourselves. Grievous to him is what you suffer" [Tawba 9:128–129], to the end of Bara'a.The pages remained with Abu Bakr until Allah took him, then with Umar during his lifetime, then with Hafsa bint Umar .

حدثنا موسى بن إسماعيل عن إبراهيم بن سعد حدثنا ابن شهاب عن عبيد بن السباق أن

زيد بن ثابت رضي الله عنه قال

أرسل إلي أبو بكر مقتل أهل اليمامة فإذا عمر بن الخطاب عنده قال أبو بكر رضي الله عنه إن عمر أتاني فقال إن القتل قد استحر يوم اليمامة بقراء القرآن وإني أخشى أن يستحر القتل بالقراء بالمواطن فيذهب كثير من القرآن وإني أرى أن تأمر بجمع القرآن قلت لعمر كيف تفعل شيئا لم يفعله رسول الله ﷺ قال عمر هذا والله خير فلم يزل عمر يراجعني حتى شرح الله صدري لذلك ورأيت في ذلك الذي رأى عمر قال زيد قال أبو بكر إنك رجل شاب عاقل لا نتهمك وقد كنت تكتب الوحي لرسول الله ﷺ فتتبع القرآن فاجمعه فوالله لو كلفوني نقل جبل من الجبال ما كان أثقل علي مما أمرني به من جمع القرآن قلت كيف تفعلون شيئا لم يفعله رسول الله ﷺ قال هو والله خير فلم يزل أبو بكر يراجعني حتى شرح الله صدري للذي شرح له صدر أبي بكر وعمر رضي الله عنهما فتتبعت القرآن أجمعه من العسب واللخاف وصدور الرجال حتى وجدت آخر سورة التوبة مع أبي خزيمة الأنصاري لم أجدها مع أحد غيره {لقد جاءكم رسول من أنفسكم عزيز عليه ما عنتم} حتى خاتمة براءة فكانت الصحف عند أبي بكر حتى توفاه الله ثم عند عمر حياته ثم عند حفصة بنت عمر رضي الله عنه
