Ali bin Abu Talib reported,

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me along with Zubayr and Miqdad, saying, "Go until you reach the meadow of Khakh. There you will find a woman traveling with a letter. Take it from her."So we set off, our horses racing along, until we reached the meadow. There we found the woman, and we said to her, "Bring out the letter."She replied, "I have no letter with me."We said, "You will bring out the letter, or we will strip off your clothes."So she pulled it out from her braided hair. We brought it to the Prophet ﷺ, and there it was, from Hatib bin Abu Balta to certain polytheists in Mecca, informing them of some of the Prophet's affairs.The Prophet ﷺ said, "Hatib, what is this?"He answered, "Messenger of Allah, do not be hasty with me. I was a man attached to the Quraysh but not actually one of them. The Emigrants who are with you have relatives in Mecca who protect their families and property there. Since I lacked any blood ties among them, I wanted to do them a favor so they would protect my relatives. I did not do this out of disbelief or as an apostasy from my religion."The Prophet ﷺ said, "He has told you the truth."Umar said, "Messenger of Allah, let me strike off his neck."He replied, "He was present at Badr. How do you know? Perhaps Allah looked upon the people of Badr and said, 'Do whatever you wish, for I have forgiven you.'"Amr said, "And concerning him was revealed, 'O you who have believed, do not take My enemies and your enemies as allies' [Mumtahanah 60:1]." He said, "I do not know whether the verse is part of the hadith or Amr's own statement."Ali narrated to us, saying, Sufyan was asked about this, "So was revealed 'Do not take My enemies and your enemies as allies' [Mumtahanah 60:1], the verse?"Sufyan said, "This is in the hadith as people relate it. I memorized it from Amr and did not omit a single letter from it, and I do not think anyone memorized it besides me."

حدثنا الحميدي حدثنا سفيان حدثنا عمرو بن دينار قال حدثني الحسن بن محمد بن علي أنه سمع عبيد الله بن أبي رافع كاتب علي يقول سمعت

عليا رضي الله عنه يقول

بعثني رسول الله ﷺ أنا والزبير والمقداد فقال انطلقوا حتى تأتوا روضة خاخ فإن بها ظعينة معها كتاب فخذوه منها فذهبنا تعادى بنا خيلنا حتى أتينا الروضة فإذا نحن بالظعينة فقلنا أخرجي الكتاب فقالت ما معي من كتاب فقلنا لتخرجن الكتاب أو لنلقين الثياب فأخرجته من عقاصها فأتينا به النبي ﷺ فإذا فيه من حاطب بن أبي بلتعة إلى أناس من المشركين ممن بمكة يخبرهم ببعض أمر النبي ﷺ فقال النبي ﷺ ما هذا يا حاطب قال لا تعجل علي يا رسول الله إني كنت امرأ من قريش ولم أكن من أنفسهم وكان من معك من المهاجرين لهم قرابات يحمون بها أهليهم وأموالهم بمكة فأحببت إذ فاتني من النسب فيهم أن أصطنع إليهم يدا يحمون قرابتي وما فعلت ذلك كفرا ولا ارتدادا عن ديني فقال النبي ﷺ إنه قد صدقكم فقال عمر دعني يا رسول الله فأضرب عنقه فقال إنه شهد بدرا وما يدريك لعل الله عز وجل اطلع على أهل بدر فقال اعملوا ما شئتم فقد غفرت لكم قال عمرو ونزلت فيه {يا أيها الذين آمنوا لا تتخذوا عدوي وعدوكم أولياء} قال لا أدري الآية في الحديث أو قول عمرو حدثنا علي قال قيل لسفيان في هذا فنزلت {لا تتخذوا عدوي وعدوكم أولياء} الآية قال سفيان هذا في حديث الناس حفظته من عمرو ما تركت منه حرفا وما أرى أحدا حفظه غيري
