Abdullah bin Masud reported,

Two men from Quraysh and one from Thaqeef, or two from Thaqeef and one from Quraysh, gathered near the House. Their bellies were full of fat but their hearts had little understanding.One of them said, "Do you think Allah hears what we say?"Another replied, "He hears us if we speak aloud, but He does not hear us if we lower our voices."The third said, "If He hears us when we speak aloud, then He hears us when we lower our voices too."So Allah revealed, "And you were not concealing yourselves lest your hearing, your sight, and your skins testify against you" [Fussilat 41:22].Sufyan used to narrate this to us, saying, "Mansur or Ibn Abu Najeeh or Humayd narrated to us," mentioning one of them or two of them. Then he settled on Mansur and dropped the others, doing this repeatedly, not just once.Amr bin Ali narrated to us, Yahya narrated to us, Sufyan Thawri narrated to us, he said, Mansur narrated to me, from Mujahid, from Abu Muamar, from Abdullah, with a similar account.

حدثنا الحميدي حدثنا سفيان حدثنا منصور عن مجاهد عن أبي معمر

عن عبد الله رضي الله عنه قال

اجتمع عند البيت قرشيان وثقفي أو ثقفيان وقرشي كثيرة شحم بطونهم قليلة فقه قلوبهم فقال أحدهم أترون أن الله يسمع ما نقول قال الآخر يسمع إن جهرنا ولا يسمع إن أخفينا وقال الآخر إن كان يسمع إذا جهرنا فإنه يسمع إذا أخفينا فأنزل الله عز وجل {وما كنتم تستترون أن يشهد عليكم سمعكم ولا أبصاركم ولا جلودكم} الآية وكان سفيان يحدثنا بهذا فيقول حدثنا منصور أو ابن أبي نجيح أو حميد أحدهم أو اثنان منهم ثم ثبت على منصور وترك ذلك مرارا غير مرة واحدة حدثنا عمرو بن علي حدثنا يحيى حدثنا سفيان الثوري قال حدثني منصور عن مجاهد عن أبي معمر عن عبد الله بنحوه
