Abu Bakr sent for me after the heavy casualties at the Battle of Yamama, and Umar was with him.Abu Bakr said, "Umar came to me and said, 'The fighting on the day of Yamama has taken a heavy toll among the reciters of the Quran, and I fear that further casualties among the reciters in other battles will cause much of the Quran to be lost unless you compile it. I think you should have the Quran collected.'"Abu Bakr continued, "I said to Umar, 'How can I do something that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not do?'"Umar replied, "By Allah, it is a good thing."Abu Bakr said, "Umar kept urging me about it until Allah opened my heart to the matter, and I came to see what Umar saw."Zayd bin Thabit said, Umar was sitting there silently. Abu Bakr said to me, "You are a young, intelligent man, and we hold nothing against you. You used to write down the revelation for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. So search out the Quran and compile it."By Allah, if he had asked me to move a mountain, it would not have been heavier upon me than what he ordered me to do regarding the compilation of the Quran.I said, "How can the two of you do something that the Prophet ﷺ did not do?"Abu Bakr replied, "By Allah, it is a good thing."I kept going back and forth with him until Allah opened my heart to what He had opened the hearts of Abu Bakr and Umar to. So I set out and tracked down the Quran, gathering it from pieces of parchment, shoulder bones, palm-leaf stalks, and the memories of men, until I found the last two verses of Surah at-Tawba with Khuzayma al-Ansari, and I did not find them with anyone else, "There has certainly come to you a Messenger from among yourselves. Grievous to him is what you suffer, deeply concerned is he over you" [Tawba 9:128] to the end of the surah.The pages on which the Quran had been compiled remained with Abu Bakr until Allah took him, then with Umar until Allah took him, then with Hafsa, the daughter of Umar.Uthman bin Umar followed him in this narration, and Layth narrated it from Yunus from Ibn Shihab.Layth said, Abdul-Rahman bin Khalid narrated to me from Ibn Shihab, and he said, "with Abu Khuzayma al-Ansari."Musa said, narrating from Ibrahim, Ibn Shihab narrated to us, and he said, "with Abu Khuzayma."Yaqub bin Ibrahim followed him in this, narrating from his father.Abu Thabit said, Ibrahim narrated to us, and he said, "with Khuzayma or Abu Khuzayma."
حدثنا أبو اليمان أخبرنا شعيب عن الزهري قال أخبرني ابن السباق أن
أرسل إلي أبو بكر مقتل أهل اليمامة وعنده عمر فقال أبو بكر إن عمر أتاني فقال إن القتل قد استحر يوم اليمامة بالناس وإني أخشى أن يستحر القتل بالقراء في المواطن فيذهب كثير من القرآن إلا أن تجمعوه وإني لأرى أن تجمع القرآن قال أبو بكر قلت لعمر كيف أفعل شيئا لم يفعله رسول الله ﷺ فقال عمر هو والله خير فلم يزل عمر يراجعني فيه حتى شرح الله لذلك صدري ورأيت الذي رأى عمر قال زيد بن ثابت وعمر عنده جالس لا يتكلم فقال أبو بكر إنك رجل شاب عاقل ولا نتهمك كنت تكتب الوحي لرسول الله ﷺ فتتبع القرآن فاجمعه فوالله لو كلفني نقل جبل من الجبال ما كان أثقل علي مما أمرني به من جمع القرآن قلت كيف تفعلان شيئا لم يفعله النبي ﷺ فقال أبو بكر هو والله خير فلم أزل أراجعه حتى شرح الله صدري للذي شرح الله له صدر أبي بكر وعمر فقمت فتتبعت القرآن أجمعه من الرقاع والأكتاف والعسب وصدور الرجال حتى وجدت من سورة التوبة آيتين مع خزيمة الأنصاري لم أجدهما مع أحد غيره {لقد جاءكم رسول من أنفسكم عزيز عليه ما عنتم حريص عليكم} إلى آخرهما وكانت الصحف التي جمع فيها القرآن عند أبي بكر حتى توفاه الله ثم عند عمر حتى توفاه الله ثم عند حفصة بنت عمر تابعه عثمان بن عمر والليث عن يونس عن ابن شهاب وقال الليث حدثني عبد الرحمن بن خالد عن ابن شهاب وقال مع أبي خزيمة الأنصاري وقال موسى عن إبراهيم حدثنا ابن شهاب مع أبي خزيمة وتابعه يعقوب بن إبراهيم عن أبيه وقال أبو ثابت حدثنا إبراهيم وقال مع خزيمة أو أبي خزيمة
